Who we are...

Stubby Lathe USA, Inc. is a company which has been formed to act as the exclusive North American importer and distributor of the Omega Stubby Lathe product line from Australia. We are selling both directly and through authorized resellers such as John Jordan who was responsible for introducing the lathes to the US and continues to be a major factor in the acceptance of the machines.

A little history

I have turned on a number of machines over the years, bought a Stubby S750 in 1999 and have never found any reason to regret the purchase -- I think that it is the best machine on the market and it continues to be a joy to use.

Over the last several years the value of the US dollar has deteriorated so as to make a number of foreign-made products expensive and the Stubby lathes are no exception. In the last two years the dollar has deteriorated 30% in relationship with the Australian dollar. This presents challenges but we believe that they are not insurmountable.

We are working with Omega to determine what can be done to help reduce manufacturing costs without reducing quality. We are mating machines with electronics and manufacturing stands here rather than importing them to help keep the costs down. This will be a reasonably low-profile business with a very limited advertising budget, no slick web site and low expenses.

Our real sales force

As we've already said, we are selling directly or through authorized remarketers. But, the real sales force is unpaid -- it is the group of happy owners around the country. We keep in touch through a closed Yahoo group -- stubbygroup. If you are in the market for a lathe you are invited to join the group, look around and ask questions. If you have not had a chance to test drive a Stubby and would like to, it is likely that there is somebody on the forum who is near you and would be willing to open his (her) shop to you so that you can try one out.

In closing...

I've retired several times already and when I started the users group some years ago, never intended it to lead to my un-retirement. The machines are just too good to be unavailable in the US, though, so I've done it again. Please feel free to talk to Stubby owners, join the users group or contact me. We want every turner to know how good these machines are and that they are worth the money for the long, happy, trouble-free and productive hours you will have with them.
